Visit to the DRI 23 Oct 2008
This morning I went to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary to have an ultra-sound scan of my neck. Apparently, I have nowt which I should be worried about, but it seems that living for 18 years in this area has given me Derbyshire Neck (as well as inclining me to use words like 'nowt').

Glad you had nothing to worry about.. By the way the photos from my blog are from Nunhead not sure whom the graves belong to, they are now public domain...
My captcha is tinsit... I don't like captchas but at least they readable now!
What's a Derbyshire neck by the way?
today's captcha is stled... they're much more readable these days - who knows maybe since I complained in my SPAM blog post against Mr Blogger?
Here's a funny one, Lucie. My latest captcha is winge!!!
Yes, I too am beginning to find them very readable - why is that, do you suppose?
Sorry, I forgot to explain Derbyshire Neck. It's a name for goitre, which is an enlarged thyroid. Apparently, in this area it is quite common due to a lack of iodine (in the water?) I don't think my thyroid is particularly enlarged but it must be a bit, according to my scan. I quite like the idea because it gives me a feeling of belonging to this county.
When I was at grammar school, we had a student physics teacher for a while. I don't remember his name, but I do remember that he told us that he came from Derbyshire. I should add that in those days it was unusual for any teacher to talk about his personal life. One of the first things we noticed about him was that he had a very prominent Adam's apple! I had been reading a home medical dictionary around that time - I was a hypochondriac even then - and I had stumbled one day across Derbyshire Neck in this book! Needless to say, this caused a lot of subsequent mirth in the classroom.
